THE MAGNIFICENT SIX

By the beginning of 2021 my wife and I decided that it was time for us to go on pension.

This meant that we would have to sell our house and therefor also my knife making workshop. It worked out that this would happen during the middle of 2022.

I wanted to make something really special as the last project of my knife making career – my ‘Swan Song’.

I met Bobby Ivanov and saw the beautiful carvings of animal heads he had made out of warthog tusks.

Right through my career I often thought of making a ‘Big Five’ knife set. The fact that I was mainly a folder maker and that these sets were done so many times by so many fixed blade makers, put me off.

Then the idea came to me – make something no one else have done before –

The Magnificent Six.

This turned out to be the biggest and most difficult project of my career and it took me nine months to complete.

Total lengths: 351mm

Blade Lengths: 210mm

Blades:

Berty Rietfeld ‘Nebula’ Carbon Damascus set with 18ct Gold and Fine Silver beads

Guards:

3D machined phosphor bronze, the design by Ruben van der Merwe and me.

The design of the heads on the guards were done by Therese van der Merwe.

They were engraved by Julien Marchal. The Phosphor Bronze was blackened.

Handles:

The frames of the handles were made of Bertie Rietveld’s ‘Twist’ Carbon Damascus.

The handle scales are Mastadon Ivory.

Liners: Titanium

I designed a ‘Double layered’ presentation case with drawers at the bottom for the sheaths.

Brian Coetzee, as always, made it to perfection.

I asked Bobby Ivanov to carve 6 miniature heads which I used as drawer handles.

I was very fortunate to get to know Felicity McNamara when she applied for KGSA Associate membership. She was kind enough to make the sheaths for me. She really went out of her way to create to most beautiful sheaths!
